Initiative on Environment & Sustainability

It began with 8,180 acres of foothills and plains, an endowment that enabled the university to bring faculty of the highest caliber out west, and it began with opportunity; a tuition-free university that opened its doors to both men and women.

Overview Stanford University

It's our Past, Present and Future.

Stanford continues with a plan to create a sustainable future for a university defined by its respect for the environment (over 2/3 thirds of Stanford lands remain open or very lightly developed), economy (sound fiscal judgments based on long term horizons) and social equity.

These three concepts, environment, economy and equity are universally defined as the foundations for a sustainable community. At Stanford, these concepts are centered on a fourth E, education.
