Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency
The mission of the Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency (PIEE) is to improve opportunities for and implementation of energy efficient technologies, systems, and practices, with an emphasis on economically attractive deployment by understanding and overcoming human behavior, market and policy barriers.
With PIEE, Stanford offers a unique approach to energy efficiency. In particular, the Institute:
- Adopts a broad systems approach, examining links between technology, policy, and market diffusion. It considers energy-efficiency problems in a wide range of economic sectors (buildings, transportation, and electric power).
- Considers both supply and demand-side barriers along with solutions to energy-efficiency challenges, focusing on demand-side barriers.
- Combines engineering, economic, and political expertise in devising solutions to energy-efficiency challenges.
- Develops an understanding of the decision-making environment in corporations, public organizations and households so as to better determine the deployment and use of energy efficient technologies and practices.
